the wedge was the browser. the slope is negotiation. the horizon is the agentic web: a machine-run internet where agents don’t just search or click.they transact, retry, and resolve outcomes on our behalf.

what it looks like

in the agentic web, agents discover vendors, parse structured feeds, negotiate terms, execute transactions, and retry when workflows fail. instead of humans navigating sites, autonomous systems arbitrate directly across platforms. a refund request, a procurement cycle, a compliance filing: all handled end-to-end by agents that talk to one another.

the infra that still needs to be built

the wedge showed us agents can act, but it also exposed the cracks. to scale, the agentic web needs rails that make autonomy boringly reliable:

• trust rails: rollback, audit, scoped secrets, permission systems that let CISOs sleep at night.

• reliability infra: headless browsers, orchestration layers, continuous evaluation loops that keep workflows alive as portals change.

• observability: traces, cost maps, and dashboards that tell enterprises what happened, why, and how to undo it.

• agent-to-agent protocols: structured standards for intent exchange, arbitration, and payment. right now, nothing close exists.

each of these is a whitespace category. each will mint new infrastructure companies.

machine-readable brands

in this horizon, brands no longer optimise for human discovery. they optimise for machine consumption. structured data replaces landing pages. refund and pricing policies must be codified, not buried in fine print. visibility in the agentic web doesn’t come from search engine optimisation; it comes from being legible to the protocols agents trust.

india as the proving ground

ondc and upi have already forced merchants and financial institutions to publish standardised digital interfaces. healthcare prior-auth, bfsi claims processing, government service portals- each is messy today, but each is already being mediated by agent workflows. constraints of low margins and fragmented infra force indian agents to evolve faster; survivors will export globally with better economics.

the opportunity

this is a refactoring of the internet’s substrate. builders who standardise the missing layers: trust rails, observability, protocols:> will own the rails of the agentic web. investors should follow the data exhaust: whoever controls logs, traces, and replay buffers will control the moat.

bottom line

AI browsers were the wedge. navigation collapsing into negotiation was the slope. the horizon is the agentic web:  an internet where the interface isn’t a site but an agent. the winners won’t be those with the cleverest clicks, but those who lay the rails that make machine-to-machine negotiation safe, legible, and inevitable.
